For this edition of the Taishin Arts Award, three international jurors are invited to join the final selection jury committee, and a specail talk is organized to discuss topics of contemporary art and urban development. 


The Three Jurors are German independent performing arts curator Dieter Jaenicke, the Director of the Hong Kong Art School Louis Yu, and the Senior Curator of the Yokohama Museum of Art Eriko Kimura. They all possess abundant experience in arts curating, arts festival planning, and arts institution operation and management, while having endeavored in facilitating interdisciplinary and/or transnational collaborations. This talk will revolve around their domestic and overseas curatorial experience, their cross-cultural observations, as well as their perspectives on the various ways of connecting arts advocacy with the culture of a city. The talk will also focus on new discoveries different from past Taiwan experiences, in particular, after their observations on and intensive discussions about the visual arts, performing arts, and interdisciplinary projects and productions in this edition of the Taishin Arts Award. This talk will be moderated by KENG Yi-Wei, who is the dramaturg of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts-Weiwuying and will lead the three international jurors in this diversely enriched talk and discussion with the public.

About the Speakers

■ Dieter Jaenicke 

Independent curator; former Director of internationale tanzmesse nrw in Düsseldorf; former Artistic Director of the European Center for the Arts Hellerau in Dresden


Born in 1949 as the youngest of six children in Rostock/East-Germany, Mr. Jaenicke grew up in the provincial capital Würzburg in the South of Germany. He studied Social-Work, Sociology, Theatre-Education and Religions in Kiel and Hannover. After his studies, he worked for 1 year as a volunteer in the UNHCR-refugee-camp for Vietnamese boat-people on the Philippine island Palawan.


Mr. Jaenicke started his professional career in a socio-cultural center in Hannover, and was responsible for the cultural program. In 1983 he founded the Internationales Theaterbuero as a private agency for arts-projects and the still existing festival Tanz-Theater International in Hannover. Then he moved to Hamburg to direct the Internationales Sommertheater-Festival Hamburg in Kampnagel for 15 years from 1986-2000. After a short intermission in Denmark as Artistic Director of the Aarhus Festival from 2000-2003, he moved to Brazil, where he was Director General of the World Culture Forum in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (global conference on arts and culture in times of globalization and digitalization) from 2003 to 2008 and Artistic Director of World-Culture Open at the United Nations and Lincoln Center New York in 2004. From 2009-2018 he was Artistic Director of the European Center for the Arts Hellerau in Dresden, after that Director of internationale tanzmesse nrw in Düsseldorf from 2018-20. Since then he, is working as an independent curator in the international performing arts field. Since the 1990es until today Dieter Jaenicke is working as an international curator for several dance-festivals in Brazil.


Mr. Jaenicke has been living and working in Germany, Denmark, Spain, Philippines, Brazil, Bolivia, USA, have initiated numerous international cultural exchange projects, amongst many others with Taiwan, China, South Korea, Canada, USA, Israel and many European, South American and African countries and worked as curator and advisor. Since 2016, Mr. Jaenicke is serving as international advisor to the Minister of Culture of Taiwan.


■ YU Kwok Lit, Louis

Director of the Hong Kong Art School


Louis Yu has more than 35 years of experience in the arts. His previous roles include the Executive Director, Performing Arts of the West Kowloon Cultural District, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. He is now the Director of the Hong Kong Art School and is also active in teaching and giving talks in different organizations. In 2022, he was awarded the Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and his first book What makes a city cultural was published. 


■ Eriko Kimura  

Senior Curator of the Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan; Curatorial Head of the Yokohama Triennale


Eriko Kimura is a curator and art historian in photography and contemporary art. She is currently working as senior curator of Yokohama Museum of Art, and curatorial head of Yokohama Triennale, and teaches at Joshibi University of Art and Design. Having previously worked as guest curator of “Kuandu Biennale,” Taipei, 2008, she also participated as a commissioner at “Busan Sea Art Festival,” 2011. She also contributes to art magazines.


Her recent curated exhibitions include; “11 Stories on Distanced Relationships: Contemporary Art from Japan,” Online exhibition organized by the Japan Foundation, 2021, “Hanran: 20th Century Japanese Photography,” National Gallery of Canada, National Institute of Photography, 2019-2020, “BODY/PLAY/POLITICS,” Yokohama Museum of Art, 2016, “Cai-Guo Qiang: There and Back Again,” YMA, 2015, “NARA Yoshitomo: a bit like you and me…,” YMA, 2012, toured to Aomori Museum of Art, 2013 and Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, 2013.

■ KENG Yi-Wei

Curator, Dramaturg of National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts Weiwuying

Now is the dramaturg of National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts-Weiwuying, visiting assistant professor of theatre arts at National Taipei University of Arts, and the curator of Tainan Arts Festival. Yi-Wei was the artistic director of Taipei Arts Festival (2012-17) and the curator of Taoyuan Iron Rose Festival(2018-2022).  He was awarded the Freundschaftsmedaille and Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
