From day to night and from darkness to dawning light, cascading mountains along with their lush trees remain quiet and still while the moving light reveal the secret of time. As time crawls steadfastly, space constantly changes its look in light and shadow, unfolding an evolving site.
Chiow Liang-Cherng has created various art series, including Beyond the Vessels (2011-2012), Mindscape (2014), In the Other Place (2016), Dust in the Light (2017) and Dim Light this year, to explore the themes of imprint, spatial composition, dynamic metaphor, reflection of memory and the interplay of light and shadow, incorporating the perception of time into his work. Each of his pottery sculptures demonstrates curvy contours and twists in sculptural form. The solid volume quietly displays the temporal traces created by the fierce kiln fire, surrounding the works and exuding variating metal shine when perceived from different angles. The gleam epitomizes the time of making the pottery sculptures, and tranquilly conveys the artist’s profound realization to the viewers. It is as if the artist’s studio exists in a remote and different time and space. As the sunset casts its remaining light and ushers in the bright moon and faint stars at night, the slowly crawling time has seemed to bestow on Chiow’s works a language that transcends any form.
Aritst / Chiow Liang-Cherng
Born in Chiayi, Taiwan in 1962, Chiow Liang-Cherng has studied sculpture as an exchanged graduate student at Japan’s Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts during 2011 and 2012, and graduated from the MFA Program of the Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts. Before he became an artist, Chiow was a renowned art designer. In recent years, he has been known for his pottery sculpture. He is currently Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts.
