Taishin Bank Foundation for Arts and Culture presents: Image Bank Treasure Hunt (Taishin Edition) by artist Tu Wei-Cheng, the winner of the 2nd jury's special award in 2003 Taishin Arts Awards. This is Tu's newest artistic developments in his Optical Gadget series, followed after his on-going project, Site of Bu Nun Civilization, which begun in 2000, and Confucius Dancing with Mambo Girl in 2010.
In Optical Gadget series, Tu Wei-Cheng creates three pieces, Film Gadget, Images of Body Measurement, and Image Bank, to present his observation of the environment and historical inquiry and imagination. In Image Bank Treasure Hunt, Tu uses microcosmic images to alter the viewer’s ways of seeing, by restoring those images of urban fragments in an antique Chinese medicine cabinet, and instructs the viewer to follow the prescribed images to explore the nearby environment in details and look for hidden treasure.
For the exhibition, which is held at Taishin Tower, 1st Floor, Tu would take hundred and twenty images in and around Taishin Tower and its surrounding area. During the exhibition, the visitors are invited to participate in this unique urban treasure hunt. hundred and twenty small pieces will be given to the first participant. Through the intersections between the artist, the environment and the participants, Image Bank Treasure Hunt (Taishin Edition) provides the participant a cultural experience with a humanistic feel in the never-ending rhythm of the modern city life.
About the Artist - Tu Wei-Cheng
Born in Kaohsiung in 1969. Graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Chinese Culture University and Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, Tainan National University of The Arts. Tu has been named the winner of Taipei Arts Award in 2001, and the winner of the 2nd jury’s special award in Taishin Arts Awards in 2003. His recent exhibitions include Optical Trick at VT Artsalon (Taipei, 2010), Nostalgia, East Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition at Korea Foundation Cultural Center Gallery (Seoul, South Korea, 2010).
