A solo exhibition of work by Jing-Yuan Chen

Dates: 12 July – 3 September 2010

Location:1st Floor of Taishin Tower (No. 118, Sec 4, Ren-ai Rd. , Taipei, Taiwan)

The exhibition, State of _ comes from Jing-Yuan Chen’s solo exhibition, The LiQUiD STATE in 2009. The artist was nominated for the 8th Taishin Arts Award, Visual Arts category. Chen specifically chose the English word \"state\" for his exhibition title as it implies both \"country\", and \"status\". This dual meaning communicates the sense of uncertainty which he feels about the location where he lives and the uncertain notions of \"country\", \"identity\", and \"property\" which are associated with this. The exhibition will include 3 animation works, 1 painting, and a projection work.

Jing-Yuan Chen was born in Taiwan, in 1984. He employs multiple elements of painting, installation and animation to imply the floating, and uncertain nature of living in Taiwan - an “island/country” state. Chen’s work often suggests some kind of allegorical narration, an approach which reflects his intent to construct contemporary fables for a “state” which is not permitted to locate itself. Through a combination of movement, narration and stacked, overlapped, and analyzed symbols, Chen’s work displays the relationship between society and environment, and also reflects the conflict between selfhood and reality.

His painting often containa comic quality, emphasizes lines and a sense of movement. The vivid lines and luscious colors in the paintings in this exhibition form a strong contrast and conflict to the theme, which implies violence and cruelty. The “representative” that appears in the work, does not have distinctive facial features and traits. It had been constantly reproduced, and as it appears as an installation work, it narrates a series of stories by holding a screen with bending posture.

Jing-Yuan Chen

Born in 1984 in Tainan, Chen is currently studying for a MFA program at Taipei National University of the Arts. He was awarded the Kaohsiung Awards in 2009. Through his creative process, Chen tries to extend and develop his work in a multi-oriented form, and also to respond features of the subject via different links and plans. The nominated piece, The LiQUiD STATE, is the first piece which Chen will exhibit to the public, and is also the beging of his personal fable.
