FLY FORMOSA – Abe Nyubo

"FORMOSA" means "beautiful" in Portuguese. In the mid-16th Century, Taiwan caught a group of Portuguese sailors' eye when they approached the water around the island, which they praised "Ilha Formosa", meaning "beautiful island".

In 2009, I came to Taiwan to see the legendary seashore, the town of Juifen and Jinguashih.  Although I didn\'t get a good view due to the thick fog covering the seashore and the mountain towns, I felt the warmth of the ocean because I had the imagination to enjoy.  Human beings are capable of imagination, which is without boundary. Take the Wright Brothers for example, flying became a reality all because they dared to imagine, motivating them to experiment so that the airplane was invented.

Self portrait-Fly Formosa

Whenever I saw my own works, I found they always had something in common.  Each work of mine is like my self-portrait.  Whether it is a music conductor or an expected mother, they are somebody else but also are myself.

I carve what I am into the work and keep it the way it is.  However, I am changing from time to time.  The \"I\" from yesterday, the \"I\" from today, and the \"I\" from tomorrow are different.  During my travel and daily life, whatever I find, my works also reflect that discovery. Whatever I grasp, my works catch it, too.  My works are the presentation of the way of my life and of the state of that very moment.

In 2009, I used the wood materials in Taiwan to portrait myself. \"FLY FORMOSA\" is a collection which I combine the wish, meaning, conflict, reality and imagination to fly. Fly! Fly!

To the friends I met in Taiwan, Thank you everyone.  I learned much here and understood what the irreplaceable is.  Please remember me.  I am grateful to meet everyone.
