Comments on the Finalist

The creative team uses the dissipating and changing effect of dance, sound, and installation to respond as well as to reflect on fractured symbolic meaning and aesthetic techniques, portraying the relationship between material disappearance and withering lives. From the phenomenon and appearances of dilapidation, the work unveils the ambiguous aura of the humanistic spirit. The production has audience members move amidst spatial-temporal fragments and directs their attention to how the body, material, or their chaotic and organic encounter produces deep and dark imagination and dialectics through an abstract art language. The audiences also indirectly step upon the fracture between materialism and idealism during this experience, along with the chances and impermanence in life hiding in the depth of this apocalyptic fable. Artwork Introduction

As evidence of the presence of the past, fractures are the remnants left behind by forces or incidents. More than mere static fissures, they are records of processes imprinted on observable objects. Re-Fracture, a research on fracture and discontinuities, conceptually stems from fracture mechanics in material science. The three creators from different creative fields develop research and connection to the concept using their respective media and contexts, like three ripples spreading across and reverberating through the space. Discarding the fictitious idea of wholeness, they take spontaneous overlaps as pivot points, via which mutual forces are exerted until fractures emerge. As the single incidence of rupture reveals various sections, the three creators retrieve the dust of oblivion from each other, from which they attempt to reconstruct via their own navigating pathway toward time reversion.

About the Artist

YEH Yu-Hsuan (movement choreographer) actively engages in collaborative creation, experimental research, and performing art practices. Her forte encompasses devising imagery of movement, as well as meticulously applying dramaturgical methodology to portray specific themes, characteristics, and individuals. Yeh also cultivates a deep awareness of local cultures and ordinary everyday imprints of movement. Her creative impetus arises from the paradox in which lies the elusive distinction between the flesh and the psyche, along with the teetering unsettledness of boundaries. From this point of departure, she delves into reshaping the functionality, fragility, and limits when the materiality of body movement encounters diverse media.

CHENG Dao-Yuan (sound creation and performer) is a multidisciplinary artist devoted to examining the concomitance and rivalry between the self and the nature of existence through experimental sound, image, and installation. This examination has been the core of Cheng’s art practice, through which he portrays the philosophical imagery of coexisting oppositions. His sound works have been released on various labels and platforms in the forms of compilations, remixes, collaborations, and programs. In recent years, he has focused on developing works of multi-channel sound, mixed media, and physical theatre, which have been showcased in art museums, art galleries, and experimental spaces.

HSIAO Yu-Li (installation design and performer) mainly works with sound and kinetic installations. In his creation of sound, Hsiao focuses on the deformation process of sound between Acoustic and Sampling. In his kinetic installation works, he concentrates on the concept of juxtaposing electronic waste and technical objects with the human body system to create his skill of assemblage and the anatomy of e-waste. In recent years, when collaborating with creators from different fields, he often thinks about the relationship between organisms and inorganic matter from the perspective of mechanics, trying to find out how the two can interfere with each other.
