Hades Apocalypse/ Fancy Frontier

Performed by How To Eat Faust Studio

Comments on the Finalists

Based on folk legends, Hades Apocalypse demonstrates a fresh image of the text through anime characters and their vivid appearances, along with a motif structured with multilayered storylines, to subvert conventional perception of folkloristics and unfold the agency of memory of the tradition in a new era. The director SU Yang-Cheng and his band of actors persistently manipulate the natural language and navigate freely the relations, using the approach of mise en scene to transcend the limitation of contemporary Taiwanese identity politics. In terms of artistic innovation, the production shows a precise grasp and use of how the theatrical energy deals with the changes of space-time, which not only provides fresh stimulations to new audiences, but also evokes the affective experiences only found in theater. Artwork Introduciton

From the perspective of a theatrical production, Hades Apocalypse is a brand-new script that combines two original comic IPs, namely, The Hades Items by Salah-D, a Taiwan Golden Comic Award winner, and The Apocalypse of Darkness Warfare by comic artist WEI Zhong-Cheng. Incorporating images and motion capture technology, the production starts from the 2.5 dimension in the anime culture and collaborates with an original creative theatre troupe in Taiwan to develop and discover anime stage plays suitable for Taiwan. They hope to attract audiences from both the community of anime and manga enthusiasts as well as that of theatre lovers through such productions in order to expand a different platform and culture.

About the Artist

Fancy Frontier was founded by a group of zealous youths passionate about anime and manga, who formed the Frontier editorial group of anime information magazines in 2008. Their members come from various fields, professions, and identities, and their common denominator is their passion for and dedication to anime and manga. Through various efforts, they hope that anime and manga can be recognized and accepted by society as a form of culture.

How to Eat Faust Studio mainly comprises playwright-director SU Yang-Zheng and lighting design WEI Cheng-Chuan. They specialize in creatively adapting different types of canonical pieces into unique theatre productions through re-assimilating, transforming, and re-organizing, to carry a contemporary spirit into these works. With Su as the center of the group, they gather many theatre artists with similar creative styles, and adhere to the spirit of “PLAY” in the context of drama to insist on playing and creating their own world in the theatre.
