NSO R. Strauss Cycle 5-Ein Heldenleben

National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan, R.O.C.

Artwork Introduction

The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) performed Johannes Brahms’ “Haydn Variations,” “Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben,” and “Arnold Schönberg’s Piano Concerto” on 14 January 2007 at the National Concert Hall.

The Brahm’s work was composed in the nineteenth century and perhaps a more familiar work to the local audience, while the other two works are by acclaimed composers of the twentieth century.

Since “Arnold Schönberg’s Piano Concerto” is rarely performed in Taiwan due to its intricacies and technical difficulties, only an accomplished pianist could perform such a work. Therefore the NSO invited renowned pianist Chen Pi-hsien who is acclaimed for her insightful playing and wonderful renditions of contemporary composers’ works. She collaborated with conductor Lü Shao-chia to create a richly woven texture of sound by the use of her skilled precision and timing, while her rendition provided the audience with a fresh perspective on the avant-garde composer’s work.

Conductor Lü also provided a new approach to help audiences appreciate Richard Strauss’ autobiographical tone poem “Ein Heldenleben.” In NSO’s avowed program to bring great composers to music lovers, the Richard Strauss Cycle includes ten subscription concerts of his music, plus pre-concert talks, and after-concert forums. The NSO hopes to share its expertise about one of twentieth century’s great composers in order that local audiences will learn to love his music while gaining insight about his compositions and career.

NSO’s former music director Chien Wen-pin has set the goal for the orchestra to be creative, persistent, impressive and sharing. The success of this concert shows that NSO strives to be their best in classical music.
