Artwork Introduction

The two leading actors are the most brilliant part of the success of the production.  Their elegant appearance and excellent body movement precisely fulfill the high expectation which the traditional opera has placed upon the actors in terms of the texture and quality of interpretation.  The adaptation of an old story “Zhuangzi Tests His Wife“ overturns the traditional view on genders with an easy touch.  Although experimental in nature, the “new Kuen Opera” still gives the freedom for the actors to sport their talent of traditional technique.  (Committee member/ Ho-yi LIN)

About the Artist

The Contemporary Legend Theatre was founded in 1986 by a group of Peking opera performers such as Wu Hsing-kuo, Wei Hai-ming and others. They wanted to integrate traditional Chinese opera which they perceived to be on the decline and infuse it with the excitement of modern theatre. Their first performance was based on Macbeth and combined singing, acting, acrobatic fighting, Chinese opera and Western drama and helped to change the audience’s expectations about Chinese opera.
