Comments on the Finalist

"Intertidal Zone" is the border between the ocean and the land, as well as the zone where the ocean and freshwater meet.  This zone is covered by water in high tide and dry during its ebb, and this versatility breeds blooming species.  Organized by Lu Ming-te, Hsu Su-chen, and Chang Sin-pi, and involving experts in animal conservation, geologists and artists, this work approaches issues of animal, plants, earth ecology, physiological science, technological civilization and culture-crossing.  Intertidal Zone Art Monitoring Station: Annual Project for 2005 is not merely the interaction of fields, but a crossing of barriers and a breaking of rules, an unsettling of the given criteria and assumptions and, finally, the reconstruction and redefinition of them.  This exhibition also expands creative perspectives, offers new visions, and employs natural ecological phenomena as tropes.  This produces a versatile field of interaction in the mode of the intertidal zone and also generates a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary art event, thereby creating more possibility and variety for contemporary arts.  (By Hwei-lan CHANG)
