Hu Kun-Jung's Solo Exhibition 2003

Hu Kun-Jung

Comments on the Finalist

This was the best expression of the operation system of the myth of commodity society in the form of art. This was a big plan, a big project, an ultimate exploitation of energy and will power, something that possessed strong creative power and ambition without neglecting either the requirements about the quality or the attention to the agenda in the rapid-going process of the exhibition. Through artistic imagination and socialized operation, this exhibition became a virtual memory of Taiwanese culture and history. The show was not only a aesthetic lie but also a dream project.

Artwork Introduction

On the one hand, Kun-Jung Hu’s work features the trace of Constructivism, particularly the trace of Suprematism advocated by Malevich. However, on the other hand, this outstanding feature may, to some extent, conceal subtle yet conspicuous cultural difference of his work.

The multi-dimensional and dynamic arrangements on the flat surface of the canvas may help us to understand the synergy generated from the combination of time, space and energy. The first impression of Hu’s arrangement of geometric shapes is the sense of being neat but volatile, and soon its underlying sensation seems to stretch towards all directions, transmits its energy to each corner and then permeates in a 2D, 3D or multiple dimensional space or time.

Compared to the attention received by the local, international arts and the seemingly opposing Taiwanese and Chinese arts, the minimal form of art, stressing the simple geometric arrangement has not received due attention. Accordingly, Hu’s exhibition hosted by Main Trend Art Gallery affords us the opportunity to gaze at the long-neglected aspect of modern art, namely the supreme aspect of it.(by Haiming Huang)

About the Artist

My belief in the traditional art and my personal persistency surely will reinforce each other. Finally, the devotion to the traditional art may start to be accepted as something avant-garde. It is something good to expect.
