Consciousness in Vacuum

Tao, Ya Lun

Comments on the Finalist

The show expressed the dialogue between body experience and technology in a minimalist way; such a try was sharply explorative. The dialogue between photography and projection was bestowed with sophisticated thought and put into practice. The show accurately controlled the close relation between the agenda and the form as well as artistically analyzed the life of modern technology in a microscopic attitude and succinct form.

Artwork Introduction

Because of his insisting on the dialogue between one’s own personal experience and the technology, Tao Ya-Lun is a maverick in the trend of high-tech art which just starts to pick up the speed in Taiwan now. This dialogue itself is a forceful and straightforward criticism toward technology. That is technology is sweeping away and replacing one's own personal experience, or even makes the existence of complete experiences impossible. Of course, the relationship between technology and personal experience may not be so exclusive but more ambiguous and flirtatious. That is a bridge does exist somewhere for the connection between technology and personal experience, or what is more is that technology even offers a new venue for the expression of personal experience.

In 2003, Tao Ya-Lun held an exhibition entitled Consciousness in Vacuum at the IT Park in Taipei. This exhibition aims to duly depict this ambiguous relationship. Consciousness in vacuum is a mental state one reaches through meditation in the East. Terms such as “concentration” or “samadhi” express the deep and tranquil mental state. To reach this kind of mental state, one has to meditate. However, if the meditating person or the meditating methods are replaced by or interfered by technology, what kind of state will one reach? That is this experimental question Tao Ya-Lun wants to pose in his exhibition.(by LIN Chi-Ming)
