Wang Te-Yu Solo Exhibition – A drift
Wang Te-Yu
Comments on the Finalist
One single material, simple forms, free ideas, and the functional character that reconstructed space, all the above attributes created an easy but close interactive relationship between the works and the viewers, fulfilling the phase-based types of expression and exploiting themselves thoroughly for the viewers. We could see the body languages that explored the medium, the exploration from social encounters to personal physical and internal beings, providing the pleasure for the viewers, creating not only funny visual forms, but also the immagination of common medium. The subversion of the division between the exhibition space and the art works is radical yet insipring enough.
Artwork Introduction
The most gripping work of Te-Yu Wang is her plastic air-filled airbag. Its gigantic structure is full of some kind of tension. Visitors have to move around and explore its inside and outside space. The space is shared by one’s own self as well as others, embodying an important transition of the modern art concept. The thick film of the airbag plays a key role in this piece of work. It shows us the subjective experiences one may have.
Visitors can physically feel the texture of the thick film. Their sense of touching and feeling dominate the visual experience. Although the film visually divides the outside and the inside, however, in fact, its texture feels the same both inside and outside. The film may be a dividing device, but itself is of an integral structure. In the other words, it is not supposed to be a physical existence, but a pure concept of being in-between. Its brimming symbolic meaning has demonstrated the depth of Wang’s work.(By Chen Taisung)
