Diagram of Commotion and Desire 3
Wei–Kuo Kuo
Comments on the Finalist
Diagram of Commotion and Desire shows the artist’s original technique of oil painting and his outstanding treatment of atmosphere and subject on canvas, where the subconscious and the real intertwine intensely. With dashing strokes and colors, it opens ups possibilities of painting in its visualization of spiritual aroma in gaze.
The artist yearns for introspective and profound tableaux to project his existence and move the audience as well.
The artist explores alternative visions of self-portraits, and reveals a new composition in his continuation of Caravaggian dramatic presentation.
Diagram of Commotion and Desire displays both a consistent effort and an excellent accomplishment in quality.
In his combination of classic layouts and romantic ambiances, the artist succeeds in welding the real characters in theater and the fantasized roles in cinema together, and thus sets up an elaborate new model of personal portraits in popular culture.
Embodying exceptionally an artistic property unoccupied by any new medium nowadays, his paintings profoundly reflects what concerns and agitates him, and faithfully reveal where his art tends and excels.
Artwork Introduction
On October 10th 1996, I felt the pieces I exhibited at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum didn’t accurately express internal spirit. These pieces overemphasized material forms, and neglected the true nature of art. Two years later I gradually entered into a clearer artistic phase. I began to return to a realistic painting style using my own body as the format for my work. This created an isolated, gloomy, and disturbed mood. This style gave me a fictitious space in which to escape the constraints hidden in the depths of my soul. A virtual space that brought to me the banter and a subtle laughter. In addition, two important forms of meaning are hidden within the works, grasping for the meaning of society and lust. In the last ten to twenty years, politics has been the leading force in the direction of Taiwan’s development. This has painfully impacted the perspectives of people living in Taiwan when contemplating the meaning of life.
